I Agreed to a Blind Date Set Up by My Friend — but It Took an Unexpected Turn

**Diary Entry – 12th October**

I agreed to a blind date my best mate Emily had set up—but things took the wildest turn possible.

It was a chilly Friday evening when my phone buzzed with a message from Emily. She’d spent weeks practically begging me to sign up for a dating app, swearing I’d find “the one” there. Honestly, I didn’t need more on my plate—work, family, and the occasional wine night with Emily were plenty. The idea of awkward dates? No thanks.

But Emily’s never one to back down. That evening, she sent me a link to some guy’s profile.

*”Found him!”* she texted excitedly. *”His name’s Jeremy. He’s perfect for you. Trust me!”*

I hesitated, but in the end, I agreed. She *is* my best friend, after all. How bad could it be?

We arranged to meet Saturday at a cosy Italian restaurant in the heart of London. The moment I walked in, I spotted a man fidgeting at a corner table, his gaze oddly restless. There was something off—like he didn’t quite fit in his own skin.

I approached tentatively. He stood, offering an awkward smile.

“Hi, I’m Jeremy. You must be Sophie?”

“Yes, that’s me,” I replied, forcing a smile.

The conversation dragged. Weather, jobs, meaningless small talk—he answered like he was reading from a script, barely engaged. Worse, he kept checking his phone, barely hiding his impatience. Maybe he was nervous? Or had an emergency?

Then things got weird.

Mid-sentence, Jeremy abruptly stood, muttered an excuse, and vanished toward the loo.

I sat alone, staring at my half-eaten pasta, the awkwardness thickening by the second.

Five minutes passed. Then ten. No calls, no texts.

Finally, I rang Emily.

“He went to the toilet and never came back,” I hissed. “This was a mistake.”

She laughed airily. *”Don’t worry! He’s shy. Give him time—it’ll be fine!”*

But time only made it worse.

I scanned the restaurant, humiliation burning in my chest. Had he *dumped* me? Panicked? Fled?

Nearly thirty minutes later, Jeremy returned—but he was missing his blazer, his face twisted in guilt.

“Sophie,” he said stiffly, “I—I have to go.”

I gaped. “What? We haven’t even finished dinner!”

He scuffed his shoe, avoiding my eyes. “It’s… just not working. I don’t want to waste your time. Sorry.”

And before I could respond, he bolted.

I sat there, stunned, staring at my cold pasta.

Then—somehow—it got *weirder*.

Emily burst into the restaurant, beaming like she’d won the lottery. She rushed over, giddy.

*”Well? Went brilliantly, yeah?”*

I stared. “He *ran* away!”

Her grin faltered. *”What? He texted me saying it was great…”* She fumbled for her phone. *”Wait—I haven’t messaged him since I gave him your number. He was supposed to handle it himself…”*

A cold suspicion crept in. “Emily, did you even *talk* to him after the first message?”

She went pale. *”Oh my god… I think I mixed up the numbers! Wrong Jeremy!”*

I froze. “*What?*”

She collapsed into a chair, horrified. *”I meant to set you up with my coworker… Did I accidentally message some other Jeremy? I was in such a rush—”*

I buried my face in my hands, torn between laughing and crying.

“So I just had dinner with a complete *stranger* who didn’t even know who I was?”

She winced. *”Sorry… I’ll fix it, promise!”*

Glancing around the restaurant—now openly gawking—I realised, absurdly, it *was* kind of funny. The most disastrous blind date of my life.

I laughed—faint, but real.

“Emily, you’re unbelievable. This’ll be a story for the ages.”

She grinned weakly. *”I’ll arrange a proper date. Just—one more chance?”*

I smirked, standing. “Next time, I’m checking *everything* myself.”

We stepped into the damp autumn rain. The humiliation still stung, but somewhere deep down, I knew—sometimes the most ridiculous moments become the best stories.

And if fate was going to mess with me, at least it did it memorably.
